Finding and borrowing library materials

Borrowing/returning library materials:

Borrowing and returning library materials and the payment of fines is done using self-service machines which are located near the entrance on Floor 0 of the building.

If you have any problems with using these machines then please ask for assistance from the Library Helpdesk on Floor 0.

More information about borrowing is available.

Finding and collecting books:

Some library book stacks and shelves are not easily accessible to people with visual and mobility impairments. If you have difficulty finding or collecting books and other materials please ask at the Library Helpdesk and a member of staff will do their best to assist you.

Database searching and training on using electronic resources:

The Library does run regular training sessions but if you would like extra help with a particular topic then please contact the Library Helpdesk. Staff will do their best to assist with any searches.

High Demand Collection:

Books and photocopies in the High Demand Collection can only be borrowed for short periods as they are in great demand by large number of students.

We advise all students to use the High Demand (Short Loan) advance booking system to plan their work and reading schedules. There is a limit to the number of bookings that can be made, however, consecutive bookings are allowed for students with additional needs. This will help you to retain items for several consecutive days, although you will still have to bring the items in each day. Telephone renewals for High Demand items are not possible. Please discuss this with staff at the Library Helpdesk.

Extended loans

It is possible for students with additional needs to increase their loan period for standard loans. If this would benefit you, please contact Jane Abson, Disability Co-ordinator in the Dean of Students' Office.

Recalls, hold requests, renewals and returns:

Books issued to staff, postgraduates or students on placement may be subject to recall by another user and the due date for return brought forward. If any of your books are recalled and you have difficulty returning them by the new date, please telephone the Library Helpdesk as soon as possible.

It is possible to request a book for yourself using  Primo OneSearch or the Library Catalogue, but if you are unable to do this then members of staff at the Library Helpdesk will do their best to assist you.

When your requested item comes into the Library you will be notified by email or by post and will be given five working days to collect it. Please see Hold requests for more details.

You can renew the loan for most books (i.e. all except High Demand items) unless somebody else has requested the item, or you have reached the renewal limit. You can renew items yourself using the self service machines on floor 0 of the Library, Primo OneSearch or the Library Catalogue. It is also possible to telephone to renew books. The telephone renewals number is 01603 592993.

There are self-return units inside the entrance to the Library, so you can return items 24 hours per day. The self-return facility has three advantages - you can return items at any time that is convenient, benefit from having items removed from your Library account immediately and you will also get a receipt, which you should always keep as your proof of return.

Please ensure that you read the instructions on screen and only return ONE item at a time.
