This page gives advice on using referencing software such as Endnote to download citations from online databases such as Web of Knowledge.
For advice on citing and referencing (constructing bibliographies) please see the 'reading and research' section on the Dean of Students' Study Guides.
There are a number of software products with which you can collect a list of references that you may need to use when writing a paper. Some of these products integrate with word processing software such as Microsoft Word to automatically create a bibliography or reference list within your paper.
Web-based products such as Connotea and CiteuLike provide an online store for your citations, can be accessed from any web browser, and also allow references to be shared with others. Another new resource is Mendeley. This provides a desktop and web client for storing research papers. The citation is then automatically extracted from the pdf, but can be manually corrected. Text within the paper can be highlighted, and 'sticky note' comments can be added. The web client allows you to identify contacts and share your own research interests. It is a fast-developing product which is at present free to the user.
An alternative used by many Mac users is 'Papers'. The Scopus plug-in for this requires a university id which is listed here. Please note, this software only works on campus.
UEA purchases a licence for Endnote - software that can be installed onto your pc and that has a variety of ways to organise references, including the ability to create reference lists (bibliographies) automatically in MS Word.
CSED provide training for staff and researchers on using Endnote. For students there is an IT Helpdesk helpsheet
The Library Helpdesk supports the direct export functionality of Endnote (see below). For other help with the Endnote software such as importing connection files onto your PC or saving records as .txt files and using filters to convert them, contact IT helpdesk, or refer to http://www.adeptscience.co.uk/
Why doesn’t the Library support Connection Files?
Most databases do not work with connection files within Endnote, as they require a separate login. Direct Export is available from products such as Web of Science and Scopus. Since you use the native database as the Source (starting point) and Endnote as the Target (the place to send the records) no adjustments or permissions are needed to use the functionality.
Examples with direct export functionality:
Select RIS format (Reference Manager, ProCite, EndNote) in the Export format and choose whether to export citations only, or additional information.
Click on Export. A File download window for file 'scopus.ris' appears, click 'Open' which will open the Endnote software and prompt for an Endnote library as above. As soon as you open the library, the records will be exported.

Endnote - web version
ISI Web of Science have recently launched a web-based version of Endnote Web for which UEA students and staff can register. Details at the homepage http://wok.mimas.ac.uk/Endnote - software version

Direct Export:
Where this is available it is the easiest way to export records from databases into Endnote. If available, it is usually an option once you have selected or marked records having done a search in any database. At that point, most databases have an option to save, email or print. Some also have the option to ‘Export to Bibliographic software or similar’ (this option may be under Save) – this is the only functionality we can help users exploit at the Library helpdesk. Why doesn’t the Library support Connection Files?

Web of Science:
Select records, click ‘Export to Reference Software’ button to export the selected records to a library or database in EndNote, Reference Manager, or ProCite. A dialog box will prompt you to select and open an ‘Endnote library’ (that is a pre-existing Endnote file (called a ‘library’) – you need to make sure you have created a ‘library’) to receive the selected records. As soon as you open the ‘library’, the records will be exported.Scopus:
Select records then click 'Output' which gives the option to export.Select RIS format (Reference Manager, ProCite, EndNote) in the Export format and choose whether to export citations only, or additional information.
