Audio-Visual Collections

UEA Library has an excellent Audio-visual collection comprising videos (closed-access) and DVDs (open-access). The collection includes commercial films and course-related off-air recordings as well as documentaries and music DVDs and videos. Items are made available to UEA staff and students for legitimate academic, teaching or course-related purposes only. The DVD collection is on Floor 2.

Other categories of user, e.g. external members of UEA Library, INTO and Regional Associate Colleges' students, should apply to the Library Helpdesk giving specific details of the material required. Access to specific items will be provided on a discretionary basis for academic purposes only.

All items are listed in the Library Catalogue and Primo OneSearch. To restrict your search to the audio-visual collection, on the Library Catalogue, type your search words followed by video? e.g. Wong Kar-Wai video? Alternatively, on Primo OneSearch you can search for Wong Kar-Wai and then narrow down your search to audiovisual materials using the left-hand menu options and clicking on Audio Visual

Summary

All DVDs on open-access on Floor 2 may be self-issued by UEA staff and students for legitimate academic or teaching purposes and will be due for return at 10:15 the next day (Monday if borrowed on Friday). VHS tapes remain on closed-access and must be requested and issued at the Library Helpdesk. If you wish to collect a VHS tape after 17:00, you will need to request it by 11:00 at the Library Helpdesk. Collection after 18:30 will be from the Library Reception Desk. VHS tapes need to be pre-booked by Friday at 11:00 for weekend use. A form is available at the Library Helpdesk. Academic staff can request an extended loan to 23:59 at the Library Helpdesk, if required for teaching or research. To request this, take your DVD to the Library Helpdesk between 09:00 and 17:00, Monday to Friday. An on-demand collection service for items not pre-requested, will be subject to staff availability. 

Borrowing

Videos and DVDs are loaned for 1 day and due for return at 10:15 the following day. Weekend loans on Fridays are due for return at 10:15 on Mondays. Please use the self-issue machines when borrowing DVDs.Plastic boxes are locked.
*Don't forget to use the unlocking device at the Library Reception Desk before you leave the Library.*

Returning

All DVDs should be returned via the self-return machine (24 hours). VHS tapes and headphones must be returned at the Library Helpdesk before 17:00, or Library Reception Desk after 17:00. Please do not return VHS tapes using the self-return machine.

Viewing audio-visual material

You can view DVDs and VHS tapes in the following locations. Advance booking is possible. All the necessary equipment is provided:

  • 6 x Group Study / AV pods on Floor 0 (2 of which are in the 24 hour IT Area)
  • Film Viewing Room on Floor 01 (opposite the main staircase) seats 12 people
  • Study carrels 229 and 230

Headphones are provided when using these areas to view material from the collection. Additionally, DVD items may also be viewed in any booked study carrel using your own computer equipment and headphones, or elsewhere in the Library on PCs, subject to the requirement not to disturb others.

Booking a Group Study Pod or the Film Viewing Room

Advance booking of Group Study Pods and the Film Viewing Room may be made using a web form. Facilities which have not been pre-booked are available for same day use. Please note that the maximum group size is for 5 people in a Group Study Pod. For larger groups, please book the Film Viewing Room which seats 12 people. Lecturers: To book the Film Viewing Room for teaching use, please contact the Library Helpdesk.

Fines and charges

There is a £2 per day fine for the late return of VHS tapes and DVDs from the DVD collection on Floor 2. Please note the return day and time which is printed on your receipt. A £2 charge for the replacement of damaged or non-returned DVD or VHS plastic boxes and a  is charged for DVDs and VHS tapes. Items returned with missing discs will be invoiced at the full replacement cost.

General 

UEA has a licence from the Educational Recording Agency Ltd for educational use of copyright material recorded off-air. UEA is also a member of the British Universities Film &  Video Council. Users are reminded that no copying of commercial DVDs and VHS tapes, even for academic purposes, is permitted under the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988, without the written permission of the copyright holder or holders.
