Library fines are intended to encourage borrowers to bring items back promptly. If you do not return or renew items on loan to you before the return date they will become overdue and will start to accumulate fines.

Fines for overdue items are currently charged as follows:

*The maximum fine per item is £10.
**Fines can only be paid once you have returned or renewed the overdue item.
***If you have more than £10.00 in fines on your account you will be BLOCKED from borrowing any more items until the fine is paid.
How do I pay a fine?
You can pay your fines at any time during the library opening hours by using the Self-Issue Terminals on Floor 0 (opposite the Library Helpdesk). Select the ‘Pay Fees’ option from the front screen and insert your campus card.Please note: Correct change must be used in the Self-Issue terminals; (a change machine is available if needed). On payment of the fine, your borrower record will be updated immediately. Please retain your receipt as this is your proof of payment.
Fines can also be paid by Post; send a cheque made payable to "University of East Anglia" to the Library Helpdesk, University of East Anglia, Norwich, NR4 7TJ. Please write your student number on the back of the cheque.
If the Self-Issue terminals are unavailable fines can be paid at the Library Helpdesk during staffed opening hours.
We accept the following methods of payment at the counter:
- Cash
- Credit or Debit card except American Express. Minimum payment £5
- Cheques (with a valid cheque guarantee card) - payable to the 'University of East Anglia'
Unfortunately we have no facility for online or telephone payments.
How do I check if I have fines to pay?
You can check your library account in the following ways:- Online via ‘My Account’, you will be prompted for your UEA user name and password. Once logged in select the ‘Cash Transactions’ link to view a list of fines and other financial transactions.
- In person via the Self-Issue Terminals on Floor 0. Select the ‘My Account’ option from the front screen and insert your campus card.
- By contacting the Library Helpdesk between 09:00-17:00 on weekdays; 11:00-19:00 on Saturday & Sundays either in person or by phone.
What happens if I don’t pay the fine?
Fines must be paid promptly. Where fines remain unpaid for 4 weeks, or where fines reach £10, borrowing rights may be suspended. Non-payment will result in an invoice being raised for the full amount of fines owing, plus a handling charge of £2.00. Prolonged failure to return library material will result in an invoice being raised for the full replacement cost of the material and for any fines due; such invoices will also carry a handling charge of £5.00 per item.Please settle all outstanding fines before you go on holiday as fines will continue to be invoiced during vacation times.
What if I am unable to return items?
If you are experiencing problems in renewing or returning your borrowed items please contact the Library Helpdesk as soon as possible.What if I have a valid reason for not returning items on time?
Fines may be waived when you have mitigating circumstances such as serious illness, bereavement or a family/personal crisis. This needs to be confirmed by your personal tutor, Dean of Students office, faculty student adviser or with a medical note covering the period in which the fines were accrued. Please contact the Library Helpdesk where a member of staff will be able to listen and discuss individual circumstances.What other Library charges are there?
The Library has 9 study carrels, on floors 2 and 3, equipped with IT facilities. Workstations have Microsoft Office, and are linked to the University network and the Web. These carrels will be issued daily on a first come first served basis, and there is a daily charge of £2.00.How do I avoid getting Library fines?
