Borrowing

Library users are expected to use the self-service machines for the issue of their books. Staff are always on hand during opening hours to help new users encountering the machines for the first time, and in other cases should difficulties occur.

A full service (including borrower record queries) is available during Library Helpdesk opening hours: Monday to Friday, 09:00 - 18:30, Weekends 11:00 - 1830 (closed on Sundays during vacation periods). Please go to opening hours for detailed information.

How can I borrow items?

To borrow library materials you will need a campus card

If you are a new student you should have received this at registration. If you do not have a campus card please ask at the Campus Card point, at the IT Helpdesk on Floor 0. Information is available for staff, students and others wishing to apply for a campus card

Loan periods and borrowing entitlements will vary. You will need your campus card each time you borrow. Do not let anyone else use your card; you are responsible for all items borrowed on it. If you lose your card, please report its loss immediately to the Library Helpdesk. If you need a replacement card fill in this application form.

To borrow materials, take the items you have selected to the self-issue terminals on Floor 0 (near the Library  Helpdesk). All library material must be issued and a receipt issued before it is removed from the building.

How do I return items I have borrowed?

Self-return units just inside the entrance to the Library enable users to return items 24 hours per day. The self-return facility has three advantages - users can return items at any time that is convenient to them, they benefit from having items removed from their Library account immediately and they will also get a receipt as proof of return.

Please ensure that you read the instructions on screen and only return ONE item at a time.

How do I borrow items I have requested?

Hold requests are situated within the High Demand Collection on Floor 0 and are available to collect during Library opening hours. Please see Reservations/holds for more details.

What happens if I do not return items on time?

You should return or renew loans by the due date and fines are levied for late returns. We do send overdue reminders (normally by email apart from those without email addresses), but the responsibility for returning items on time is entirely yours. Prolonged failure to return or renew loans will result in the raising of an invoice for the replacement cost of the item(s) plus fines and a handling charge for each item.

How can I renew items I have on loan?

You may renew items on loan to you via Primo OneSearch as long as they are not reserved for another reader and you have not reached the maximum number of renewals. The Library Helpdesk can advise you how many times this can be done. You must return recalled items by the new due date stated on the recall notice; failure to respond to a recall notice will result in heavy fines.

What should I do if I have returned an item that still shows on my account, or lose something I have on loan?

Please read this helpsheet [PDF 8 KB] for procedure on books still on your account you think you have returned, and books you may have lost.

If you lose any Library material, please report its loss to the Library Helpdesk as soon as possible.
