How much can I borrow?

If you are unsure about costs you will find some budget guides on our web pages. Adapt this budget to suit your expected personal needs. We have the right to question or refuse any costs which we deem to be unreasonable. Ensure you include any funding you will be receiving from other sources such as sponsorship, i.e. University scholarships etc. Applicants may borrow up to the Cost of Attendance limits which are set by the University. You can only apply for costs for the period studying e.g. postgraduate 12 months or undergraduate 9 months.

The Cost of Attendance

In order to determine your eligibility for the various forms of loan available, the University first calculates the cost of attendance (COA). This is what the University believes is the cost of attending the specific course that you have enrolled on for one academic year. It includes tuition fees, course materials, room and board and allowable travel costs.

If you feel that the cost of attending the university is significantly different from the COA that has been calculated for you, then you should send an email to usfinaid@uea.ac.uk.

This table shows the amounts of Stafford loan a student can borrow, depending on the course and year they will attend. Amounts are listed in US dollars. All undergraduate loan amounts are subject to pro-ration.

* Dependent students whose parents are not eligible for a PLUS loan may have increased limits within the unsubsidised Stafford Loan programme.
** Independent students, as determined by the FAFSA, may borrow at increased limits as well.

From 1 July 2012 Graduate and professional students are no longer eligible to receive Federal Direct Subsidized Loans. The terms and conditions of Direct Subsidized Loans received by any student for loan periods beginning before 1 July 2012, for either graduate or undergraduate study, are not affected by this change.

Note: PLUS, GradPLUS or private loans are intended to cover remaining costs above any financial aid awarded, without any set annual maximums. The Cost of Attendance includes tuition fees and living costs and is set annually by the institution.
