MSc International Business Finance and Economics
Hi! My name is Li Yang, and I am one of the two Chinese ambassadors at UEA. I just finished my undergraduate degree course in Accounting and Finance at UEA this summer, and am now studying a Masters course in International Business Finance and Economics.
The reason why I chose to stay at UEA and continue doing my Masters here is because UEA is a brilliant university. It has very good academic reputation in Media, Environmental science, Business, Economics and some other courses. It is ranked 145th amongst the world’s universities. I really enjoyed the teaching methods here. In order to combine theories and practices, our courses are arranged with lectures and seminars. Basically, lectures are usually about theories, and practical seminars can help us understand the theories more clearly. In seminars all the students who are studying the same course will be split into smaller groups, so that everybody has a chance to discuss questions with their seminar leader or classmates. The university often invites some guest speakers who are very professional and experienced in specific fields to give students more ideas about the field. There are a wide range of resources in the library, which students can use, like computers, books, scanners and printers.
Apart from academics, life in Norwich is so brilliant. It is near Cambridge and located in Norfolk, which is one of the safest counties in the UK. What’s more, it’s less than 2 hours away London by train. The shopping centre here is perfect for all of you who like shopping. The Norwich market opens 7 days a week with cheap and fresh fruits and vegetables. There are also several Chinese supermarkets and restaurants, so if you miss Chinese food, they are good options. I have been living in Norwich for three years; the beautiful green campus is really the best place for studying. When you are free, you can have a walk around the lake, and you will see some swans and ducks. It is so peaceful and natural. Accommodation here is fantastic! Norfolk and Suffolk Terrace, the ‘Ziggurats’, have the best view of the lake! The supermarket, banks, post office and restaurants on campus have made living on campus more convenient. Additionally, for those of you who like sports, Sportspark is an ideal place that has made this university outstanding among the UK’s universities. It has an Olympics standard swimming pool that is open to everyone! You can also join some sports courses or clubs there, such as swimming, tennis and badminton, etc. UEA has many societies you can take part in as well, like Japanese society (you can learn Japanese), Asian Pop music society (they have live concerts sometimes, it’s really enjoyable!), and International Student Society (they hold various events or parties). The LCR holds themed party every Tuesday night where you could dress up and dance. I have gone twice with my flat-mates, and the experience was so unforgettable and enjoyable! All of these have made my life in UEA rich and colourful!
If you would like to know more about UEA or Norwich, you are more than welcome to contact me. I will be very pleased to help you.
PhD Film Studies
My name is Qian ZhengYi. I`m a UEA postgraduate student who is doing his first year PhD course in Film Studies. I just finished my Masters Degree in Film Studies here last year and I decided to continue my PhD research. The reason I choose UEA is because of its high reputation in Media Studies and particularly Film Studies. It has a solid academic team with well-known staff and modern facilities to support your studies. There are many opportunities to get involved with the latest academic research in your field through conferences, research projects and film or art festivals. That`s the main reason that I chose UEA to achieve my research goals.
Apart from academic activities, UEA also offers students lots of opportunities for transnational communications. It is an international university where you can get to know people from different countries and cultural backgrounds. During the past year, I have made friends from Greece, America, Germany, Pakistan and other countries. I went to the cinema, concerts and exhibitions with these international friends, which has not only immersed me in British culture, but has also broadened and enriched my perspective on the arts and life The combination of classical culture and modernity is a main feature of Norwich. Here you can appreciate a classical music concert or fine arts exhibition at the medieval cathedral and then watch the latest Hollywood Blockbusters at the IMAX. In addition, if you are a fan of literature, Norwich should be your first choice as just last year, it was nominated as one of the UNESCO cities of literature.
The University also has a great living environment. For the last year I have lived at the University Village, a quiet and neat place for studying and living. Norwich is a historical city with peaceful pace of life and healthy environment. The support systems at UEA are also of a very high standard. If you have any enquiries, they will be swiftly and efficiently resolved by the Dean of Students Office, Union Advice Centre or Library Help Desk.
UEA and Norwich have been so inspirational for me and my studies that I will always recommend them.
If you have any questions about life at UEA, or how to apply email me at chinesestudents@uea.ac.uk
MA Media Culture and Society
I’m Chen who comes from Shanghai. I studied media, culture and society, which is one-year master course at UEA. I am so glad that I became a member of students here. The reason I decided to choose this media course as my main major in PSI faculty is because media studies gains very good reputation and awards very top ranking all around the universities of UK. Here I am going to share some my own experience at UEA.
UEA is located at Norwich at where is the greenest city in UK. The environment makes me feel comfortable and peaceful, so for personal thinking that this is the ideal place to live and finish my master degree. Media faculty is one of the most outstanding faculties in UEA. As a media course student, I have been taught a series of lectures from different faculties’ professors. Because the course is separated into 5 specific aspects of media, which including law, policy, economic, film studies and media discourse. The advantages of that is it makes me not only stand by a single level of how media looks like, but also helps me to deep understand the whole systems of running media. Especially, discussing the western issues in media field, which I am so appreciated to know that as a Chinese, I found more interesting about comparing the difference about media systems between China and Western. In addition to these excellent academic knowledge taught, I’ve also got chance to practice those theories in real, that makes me feel more useful and activities. Following this course strategy, I have got a great opportunity to work for both BBC Voice and Norwich local media group - Epic studio as a trainee journalist. During that course, I have learnt how to produce a piece of news and as the result my news was released on public as regular news. Moreover, students who belongs to PSI could choose any other relevant courses to assist this big subject and to help them understanding media better and more precise.
Last but not the least, I want to mention at there is that media faculty has offered massively internship opportunities for their students. And for International students, UEA meanwhile, set one special session to teach us how to competitive with home students.
MA Media Economics
Hello, I am Mengxi and I am doing my Master degree in Media Economics, last summer I have just graduated from UEA in Society, Culture and Media as my undergraduate degree which I thoroughly enjoy. Many UEA students/graduates have their own key words to describe our beloved university, my one would be fascinating.
Three and half years ago, I came to Norwich to study in UEA because of its good academic reputation especially in the major of Media and Culture study, and the 3 years study experience has made me so proud to be an student made by UEA. The course has not only taught me the valuable knowledge, but also it helped me found the things I wanted to experience, broadened my view and offered me a great deal of life experience. For example, I did internships in the local radio station which I learned so much from and totally loved.
UEA has the kind of campus that you will fall in love as soon as you walk through, it has the amazing broad view of a on campus lake; a forest in which I often take a walk in the morning; a wide range of accommodation with different standard offer safe living space for international students; an three-star on campus hotel that provided convenient rooms for friends and family visit; Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts attracts many world class artistic exhibitions. and of course shops, restaurants, bank and post office. One of my favourite things to do is sitting in the amazing on campus coffee bar chatting with friends or read a book whilst enjoy a cup of well made coffee.
Norwich as a beautiful historical city, it is famous for being the most cultural city in UK with its 900 year old Cathedral, there is always some fun things to do. And no matter in the big shopping centres or the small independent shops, you will always be able to find your style and needs.
MA Applied Translation Studies
Yiyi is my name and I am from Hangzhou, capital city of Zhejiang province, China. I am currently taking the postgraduate programme of applied translation studies, language and communication studies (LCS).
One of the reasons why I chose UEA for my further pursuit of study is that one of my professors recommended it to me saying that the social science and language studies are outstanding among UK universities, which is evidenced after I have completed the autumn semester studies of translation and languages. Apart from the social sciences, I also learned that the business, biology and particularly media studies are UEA’s strong points, earning this university tremendous word of mouth, which confirmed that my choice for UEA is an absolutely right one.
The life of Norwich is impressive as well, giving me the experience of an utterly different culture and custom; the peacefulness, safeness, and friendliness of local people let me feel at home. Compared to other cities in UK, Norwich has unparalleled advantages in terms of low crime rate, clean environment, peaceful living conditions, rich historical sites and scenic spots (a lot to explore).
During the first semester of studies, the professionalism, dedication and efficiency of the faculty is highly impressive. The teaching measures and contents are very illuminating and inspirational, which giving me the insight of my field that I never expected before.
The extra curriculum activities are so various and colourful here that can pick almost every interesting societies that I can imagine. There are lots of parties organized by Union as well as societies that can socialize with students from all around the world. The accommodation here is quite comfortable and convenient no matter in or off the campus, and the rooms are available in most of the year.
MSc Strategic Supply Chain Management
Hello, my name is Wang, you can call me Amelia. I come from
This is the second year of me staying in
One year in
The teaching quality of UEA is extraordinary. The teaching facilities here are definitely state-of-the-art, which makes the classes vivid and lively. The teachers here are really experienced both in teaching and in real world practice. I can truly see the efforts they made to prepare the lectures and make them more understandable and full of fun. The interactive atmospheres they create in classes are impressive, which makes the learning more enjoyable. What is more, the individual supports they provide are totally helpful and attentive, we can book an appointment with any of them to discuss the problems we encountered in our studies or daily lives.
The social life here are colourful, with a student union just won the 2009 Student Choice Award, we get a wide range of different societies and clubs to choose, you will certainly find the one for you~! Also I want to specially mention the student accommodation here: fully furnished with an internet access, an en-suite bathroom exclusively for me to use, no need to handle the bills and fees, weekly room service, all of which makes the accommodations here a home away from home. Living here with other nice and friendly flat mates gives me the opportunity to meet people from various parts of the world which really broaden my horizon.
MSc Finance and Economics
MSc International Human Resource Management
My name is Yuyang and I’m from China. I’m currently studying (MSc) International Human Resource Management in Norwich Business School and quite enjoying my course and life in here.
Unlike Manchester University in which I was studying before, UEA has most of its university facilities gathered in a certain area. As I live in campus, I can see crowds of students go to and back from school, which makes me more feel like a university student here. This feeling could hardly be obtained in some other so called ‘city universities’. UEA is beautiful, especially for the large park near the main entrance, the big lake in the south, and lianas climbing upon the walls.
For my degree study, I think NBS is allocating course units in a great way. As a business student, you will learn basic knowledge in the first semester, covering AF (accounting and finance), marketing, HR and IS (information system). Then in the second semester, specific units will be taken according to your major. It is a great structure let students both study general knowledge and focus on own fields.
UEA has students from lots of places in the world, and it is a great chance here to communicate with people from different cultures. I quite enjoy the one year MSc course here and hope UEA could strengthen its Top 20 position and attract more students
Language, Linguistics and Translation studies
MA Education and Development Studies
My education opportunity at the University of East Anglia (UEA) was made possible with the kind support of Joint Chevening Scholarship by the British Council and UEA. My international friends in development field recommended UEA to me. I made up my mind to come here when even a representative from another UK university highly praised DEV at UEA!
It was until a reunion with other Chinese scholars who study at other universities, I began to realize how UEA has gained its top rank for student satisfaction. I began to really appreciate everything at UEA that I took for granted at the beginning. From registering for NHS and the police registration, opening a bank account to taking the bus and so forth, UEA has taken careful consideration and managed to provide detailed, timely assistance. My friends were amazed to know that UEA has free English class not only for students but also for family members; that I registered with the police on campus instead of taking all the trouble travelling and queuing for hours; that I opened my bank account within three days… Not only UEA, but also the whole Norwich city is really a student-friendly place. And they are still trying to improve to the perfect!
After about two weeks of familiarizing myself with the academic environment, I gradually became very fond of Development School at UEA. The school really deserves its reputation for its both theoretical and empirical foundation. The lecturers spend one third of their time in overseas development group (ODG) working in developing world. I think this is one important source that makes the classes inspiring, innovative, lively and practical. My advisor is always very encouraging and thoughtful in helping with my personal and academic life here at UEA. My schoolmates are from all over the world, friendly and always eager to help, which makes me feel like at a home of mini-UN. I can expect interesting and vigorous discussion in a seminar, workshop or just at an after-lecture tea or a party. Well, my study here did not teach me how to do things specifically as I expected, but equipped me with the capability of analyzing, questioning, exploring and working out how to do things myself. Now I know this is what I want and I’ve made the right choice.
PhD Economics
With a joint scholarship between UEA and China Scholarship Council (CSC), I started my research in 2005. Looking back the last three years, I am really pleased by this opportunity.
My research is personnel economics which cross disciplines of economics, management and psychology. Basically I use economic theories and econometric models to analyze employee data from firms, providing quantitative analysis for human resource management or reveal policy results. The School of Economics enjoys good reputation in the UK with a strong research team, which enable me to access rich research resources. PhD students are supported by the faculty. Advanced Modeling is specialized for us. We are offered the best facilities at the school and access to updated social science software package: such as Stata, SPSS; and with Ecowin, we could generate up- to- date economic data around the world.
The school with a compact size which means PhD student could receive individual attention. I know the faculties well; both of my supervisors are dedicated people, usually work over weekend. I often drop in my supervisor’s office at weekend. With their sufficient support, one of my papers had been published at an academic journal, which could be access to at http://www.blackwell-synergy.com/toc/asej/22/1.
The system at university, what I could say, is very supportive: not only academically but also over daily life. University library is rewarded as Technology Advance; with Metalib, we could access hundreds of E-journal. Inter-lending service make sure we get academic resource we need. In addition, the Centre for Staff and Educational Development (CSED) run regular courses to develop PhD students’ career skill, to strengthen our ability in job market. Particular, I am really impressed by administration system at UEA: either to collect a letter for visa extension or to find a local service, I always have great experience with administration people, they are not only professional, but also let me feel how happy they would like to assist or help.
For me, I could not think any better place to do my research than at UEA.
PhD Environmental Sciences
I already finished my PhD study in March and come back to my home country on 1st April. However, I am still glad to present a testimonial to express my thanks to the University and the School of Environmental Science, who kindly provided the scholarship to fund my study.
I'd like to say the University of East Anglia is a good place for study, thanks to its academic reputation and the living environments. The School of Environmental Sciences is famous around the world with its distinguished research, especially in the field of global warming. The faculty and the service team of the School are friendly and helpful and made me happy during the 3-year study.
PhD Biological Sciences
I am Wei, a PhD student in School of Biology. I got a CSC and UEA connected scholarship, which means the first year half of the tuition fee was supported by CSC and the other half by UEA. After that I got a scholarship form UEA for waiving my tuition fee. Thank UEA for giving me the scholarship so I could go on with my PhD study here.
My supervisor is Dr. Jelena Gavrilovic, who is a very kind lady. The members in the group are all friendly, so I think I am very lucky.
As is all known, Norwich is a quite, safe and beautiful city. The first year I lived in Norfolk Terrace, which also had a quite good view from the window.
Overall, my study in UEA is a happy experience.
PhD Biological Sciences
I have been doing PhD study in School of Biological Sciences at UEA since I was awarded a joint scholarship between UEA and China Scholarship Council. Three years’ life here at UEA made me grow up from a science student to a science researcher. It gave me the opportunity to work with leading scientists and to use advanced facilities and techniques to discover nature secrets; the opportunity to listen to the talks given by famous scientists including Nobel Prize winners and to present my own work in front of hundreds of audients; the opportunity to read a variety of scientific literatures and to demonstrate biological experiments to undergraduates. All these broaden my knowledge, perfect my skills, and make me prepared for my future career. Thank you, UEA, for giving me such a wonderful life experience I will never forget.
Although it has been two years since I graduated, I can still remember my life clearly at UEA. We had excellent professors in the school, nice and clean accommodation, friendly Dean of students, lovely girls at the UFO etc. It is an unforgettable experience in my life and if I ever get a chance I will go back and visit. Such a beautiful and charming university while Norwich is a tidy but active city. I miss shopping at Debenhams. I am very grateful to the Remada Hotel for giving me the opportunity to work for a year it has given me a valuable work experience. I am currently working as assistant division merchandise manager at duty-free luxury products retailing in China. Many thanks to all the professors at UEA because I often thought it was difficult to overcome the obstacles in all my assignments, but they believed in me.
Development studies
我推荐东安格利亚大学的发展系(DEV School), 为该校的发展系融汇了经济学、社会学和环境学理论与实践的多门学科
UEA的发展系被评为4星级(最高为5星),拥有很高的教育质量
PhD School of Biological Sciences
It’s been such a great time studying at UEA. Heading the end of the third year of my postgraduate study, I have experienced a wonderful life here.
With my colleagues and my supervisor, I am doing research work in the School of Biological Sciences. To finance my study, I have got CSC-UEA joint scholarship, and first Derek Bryan and Liao Hongying scholarship, which supports one Chinese student every two years.
I am working in a very good lab with my colleagues and my supervisor, who is an intelligent scientist. I have learnt a lot since the first month I joined the lab work. Now, we are the leading group in the field of our study. You can always get what you want from courses, lectures, workshops and so on if you work hard enough.
Life at UEA is easy and comfortable, with most of the facilities you need and beautiful sense around the university and Norwich. The variety of students and cultural events here makes life so much fun after study.
It is indeed one of the most important experiences for me to study at UEA.
PhD Law
As a third year PhD student at the UEA Law School, I am really enjoying my research and my life here.
Besides boasting a high reputation in the quality of its teaching and research, UEA can provide you with the best facilities necessary for your study, such as a very spacious library with a 24-hours IT area. Also, with over 1000 non-UK students from more than 100 different countries and ethnic groups, UEA is a real international community within which you could appreciate multicultures and make worldwide friends. Maybe more importantly, having all-year-round interesting social events and fantastic natural environment (especially the beautiful lake with so many lovely birds) on campus and countless pubs/theatres/shops/parks nearby, you will never be short of exciting things to do and nice places to go.
Studying at UEA may be challenging and even expensive, but I can assure you it is a very rewarding investment for your future if you make use of the chances this lovely university offers you.
