BA Creative Writing
My name is Kathy and I am a second year undergraduate studying at UEA’s
More important that the city, though, in the university itself, and frankly its fantastic. While from repution I knew my course would be challenging and demanding, I in no way expected the staff and the program to be so accessible and student friendly. I more than enjoy my time in my studies – I actually feel athome in my seminars and lectures and never hesitate to ask my teachers questions or to seek their advice.
My course is fascinating and helps prepare me for my future as a writer ahead – but not only that – I stay engaged and focused, and over a year into my studies at UEA, I am still incredibly excited and ready for more.

MA International Relations and Development Studies

Hello! I’m Patricia and I am a post-graduate student studying International Relations and Development Studies at UEA. I am originally from California but I grew up in New Mexico. I graduated from the University of New Mexico in 2006 with a B.A. in Psychology and University honours with international distinction. During my undergraduate program, I studied at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada for one year. I had such a great experience in Canada that I wanted to go abroad again which brought me to UEA for my master’s degree.
UEA has one of the top Development Studies programs in England if not the world and it has a diverse group of students from all over the world. I really enjoy studying at UEA because of the world class lecturers and great facilities such as the 24 hour computer lab (I spend a lot of time there and in the library). The social life isn’t bad either; I am in two societies and the dev students organize nights out. I would encourage any student to study abroad and particularly at UEA. Everyone is very welcoming and friendly and ready to help you settle into your studies.

Creative Writing
Traveling to England to spend a semester studying abroad as a Creative Writing student at UEA was a huge leap out of my comfort zone. I was terrified to spend six months an ocean away from my friends and family. In many ways -- though I had previously moved away from home to attend the University of Southern California -- this time at UEA has been my true test of independence. I have grown so much – as a student, a writer, and a person – through my experiences. I have made lifelong friends, learned to successfully navigate public transportation, and even know how to make a decent curry! I feel so content here, whether I am walking along the path by the lake, soaking up the springtime sunshine in the square, or enjoying a pint with new friends at the Union pub. I savor every day that I have here as a treasure!
I spent the three weeks of my spring break from classes backpacking through Europe, traveling through Portugal, Spain, France, Germany and the Czech Republic. I gained confidence in my ability to navigate foreign places, solve problems, make new friends, and communicate across language barriers. I am also soaking up new experiences – places, people, foods, cultures – to use in my writing. Studying abroad at UEA has been the best decision I ever made, and one that has nurtured and solidified my sense of self more than any other experience in my life.
US Federal Aid
United States citizens or permanent residents can apply for loans if they have been offered and accepted an offer of a place at the University of East Anglia. We are eligible to certify US Federal Loans, and our FAFSA code is: G10 915.
Information on the processes for Federal Student Loans and Private Loans is detailed below.
If you need any assistance or have any questions regarding these processes, please contact us at usfinaid@uea.ac.uk
Federal Student Loans
On March 30, 2010, President Barack Obama signed the Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act of 2010 (HCERA) that, among other things, makes significant changes to the federal student loan programs for eligible U.S. students. One of the provisions of the HCERA is the termination, as of July 1, 2010, of the bank-based Federal Family Education Loan (FFEL) Program. Beginning July 1, 2010, all new Stafford, PLUS, and Consolidation loans for eligible U.S. students can only be made under the William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan (Direct Loan) Program. To ensure students have uninterrupted access to federal student loans, all eligible participating schools operating outside of the U.S. are now allowed to participate in the Direct Loan Program.
Federal Direct Stafford Loan
The primary loan available to students is the Federal
Direct Stafford Loan. The results of the Free Application
for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), along with the cost of attendance
and information regarding other financial aid received, determine
whether the loan will be 'subsidised' (meaning the US government
pays the interest while you are in school) or 'unsubsidised'
(meaning that interest on the loan will begin to accrue immediately
after disbursal).
To receive a Stafford Loan:
- Complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
- Complete Loan Entrance Counselling (if a first-time borrower)
- Complete a Master Promissory Note
- Maintain at least half-time enrollment in a degree-granting programme
- Maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress
Federal Direct PLUS and GradPLUS Loans
Federal Parent Loans for Undergraduate Students (PLUS) are loans available to parents of dependent students. Graduate PLUS loans are available to independent graduate students. Unlike Stafford Loans for students, the PLUS/GradPLUS loans are not guaranteed. Credit check will commence upon receipt of the Loan Application and Promissory Note. The PLUS/GradPLUS programme allows parents and graduate students to borrow funds up to the cost of attendance, after reductions have been made based upon any financial aid received.
To receive a PLUS or Graduate PLUS Loan:
- Complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
- Complete Loan Entrance Counselling (if a first-time borrower)
- Complete a PLUS Loan Application and Master Promissory Note
- Maintain at least half-time enrollment in a degree-granting programme
- Maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress
If parent(s) are declined the PLUS Loan, the following options are available:
- The student may be eligible for an additional unsubsidised loan (contact the Director of Financial Aid)
- The parent may seek an endorser.
- The parent may appeal the credit decision.
How much can I borrow?
This table shows the amounts of Stafford loan a student can borrow, depending on the course and year they will attend. Amounts are listed in US dollars. All undergraduate loan amounts are subject to pro-ration.

increased limits as well.
Note: PLUS, GradPLUS or private loans are intended to cover remaining costs above any financial aid awarded, without any set annual maximums. The Cost of Attendance includes Tuition fees and living costs and is set annually by the institution. We will currently certify loan amounts up to $35,000 per annum.

When should I apply?
FAFSA applications may be made from
1 January each year.
Students must apply for Stafford
loans on an annual basis and are recommended to start
the application process anytime from 1 March each
year.
Applications for PLUS, GradPLUS and private
loans should be submitted no earlier than 6 months
prior to the start of the course.
NOTE: Any application being received within a month of the course start date cannot be guaranteed to be processed in time for the start of the course or to provide the required documentation for any Visa.
How can I apply?
All students should initially apply for the Stafford loan as
it is the most beneficial loan available to students. This process
must be completed annually for further loan
amounts.
Students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student
Aid online to generate the essential Student Aid
Report (SAR). As an overseas institution, no information is
received directly from FAFSA and we require students to send a
complete hard copy of the SAR to:

Aid

f: +44 1603 593 718
Students may contact FASFA to request a hard copy of the SAR at +1 800 433 3243
When will funds be disbursed?
The University requests that Stafford and PLUS/GradPLUS loans
are disbursed in three (3) installments, in accordance with US
regulations. The first disbursement of any Stafford or
PLUS/GradPLUS loan can only be collected from the University after
confirmation of attendance is established, in accordance with US
regulation. Disbursement dates generally fall in October, January
and April of each academic year.
Entrance
Counselling must be completed prior to receipt of the first
loan cheque and Exit Counselling must
be completed prior to receipt of the final loan cheque. Students
will be emailed when required to complete a counselling
session.
What is Satisfactory Academic Progress?
All students receiving US Federal Aid must progress satisfactorily, and in a timely manner, towards completion of a chosen academic degree program in order to remain eligible to receive US loan support. Students:- Should not exceed 150% the published time frame for the degree programme and should remain enrolled at least half time.
- Should pass course/modules with a minimum of grade C equivalent to confirm satisfactory progression.
What is Financial Aid Probation and/or Suspension?
Should a student not meet the aforementioned procedures for
establishing Satisfactory Academic Progression, the University will
place the student on Probation for the following
term -- until more credit marks become available or the failed
module can be re-assessed.
If the probationary period does not end with a resumption of
Satisfactory Progress, the student may lose their entitlement to US
Loan support through Suspension.
The Director of US Financial Aid will confirm in writing any
probation or suspension period with the individual student should
the situation arise.
What is the repayment period?
Direct Stafford Loan
Repayment for subsidised loans begins six (6)
months following graduation OR when the student ceases to be
enrolled at least half-time. Unsubsidised loans go
into immediate repayment, although interest and principle can be
deferred until six (6) months after graduation OR cessation of at
least half-time enrollment. For detailed information regarding repayment, deferments, forbearance, forgiveness programmes and other frequently asked questions, please visit: www.dl.ed.gov.

Tuition Refund Policy
If a student who receives US Federal Financial Aid withdraws
from the University, a recalculation of US Financial Aid
eligibility will be based on the period of attendance. As a result,
the student may be required to pay money back to the US Federal
Government from any Stafford or PLUS/GradPLUS loans that may have
been received.
Should the University be required to repay funds received for
tuition to the US Government, the student may be billed for
additional fee payment to replace these funds.
Pro-rata refund calculations apply for any student who withdraws
within 60% of the payment period. If a student withdraws prior to
completing 60% of the payment period, the University will calculate
any refunds based upon the period of attendance for the specific
term. The last date of attendance will be the date confirmed by the
Director of US Financial Aid; all calculations undertaken are
performed in accordance with regulations set by the US Department
of Education and will not be altered.
Private Loans
Some private lenders will offer top-up support, and are not
connected to the US government. This option is available to all
students, although some students may require a co-signer. Loans are
based upon credit history and rates will vary.
