Seed Security : East Timor
Dr Shawn McGuire has been co-leading a Seed Systems Security Assessment in East Timor all October. This involved intensive field study of constraints to seed and livelihood security facing smallholder farmers in this new nation, with teams of NGO, Ministry of Agriculture and FAO experts.
The assessment highlighted issues affecting seed provision, storage losses, access to innovations, and value chains, and detailed site-specific plans of action. These will be presented to donors and policy-makers on 25 October, with the aim of funding new strategies to secure food and nutritional security, support livelihoods, and foster resilience.
This work is supported by USAID, Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance.
