Postdoctoral Bid Writing Awards

Three postdoctoral bid writing awards worth £1,600 each are available to early career scholars within 12 months of the award of a doctorate and who do not yet hold a permanent academic job. Funding is for four weeks of writing time, to enable the candidate to work on a postdoctoral application to a funder/s of their choice, in an area of study that contributes to the research environment at the School of International Development where the postdoctoral fellowship will be held.  More information on research in the School can be found:

Please note that awards are subject to tax and National Insurance deductions at source. 

Successful candidates will be supported by an appropriate member of staff, that has been identified by the applicant. Should the application be successful in attracting funding, the award holder will complete the funded research project with the School of International Development



Applicants must have been awarded a doctoral degree within the last twelve months, or in the process of submitting the final version of their PhD post-viva.


Application process

There are three deadlines to submit applications:

Criteria for assessing proposals are: Academic background and reference; Quality of research proposal; Fit with mentor and school research areas; Fit with funder’s priorities.

Applications should take the form of a short written proposal, following the template below. Every application must be accompanied by a 1-2 page CV, an academic reference from your dissertation supervisor (unless this is your proposed mentor), and information about the proposed funding opportunity. Only applications which include all the above-mentioned documentation will be considered.


Outcomes of application & taking up an Award

Applicants will be notified of the outcomes of their applications via email within two weeks of the application deadline.

Proposal (max. 2 A4 sides in size 12 font).

This should provide:

  • an overview and rationale of the proposed study, including planned outputs
  • details of funder/s and an indication of how this meets funder/s priorities
  • details of how this both fits with the research interests of the proposed mentor and strengthens an existing research area in the School.


More than one funder and deadline may be identified. It is envisaged that the bid writing activity would last for four weeks of funded time (no extra funding will be made available). You are not required to be resident in Norwich during this period but will be expected to stay in close contact with the mentor. Work must be completed within three months of receiving the award and DEV should receive a copy of the submitted bid. 

Your application should also include a half page statement of support from the staff member (alongside the two page proposal).
