Biography

Over the last three years I have worked in areas where natural resource management has strong implications for local livelihoods: looking at fisheries in Alaska, wetland management in Belarus and in 2010 helping to monitor the ReDirect PES project in Rwanda. These experiences have fuelled my interest in the social and economic details required to realise development at the same time as conserving ecosystems.

Up to 2007 I spent five very happy years as warden and researcher on some of the UK’s islands, looking at ways of protecting vulnerable seabird populations both on land and through marine protected areas. And even further back I studied economics and qualified as a chartered accountant ….. one who enjoyed being outside too much for it to be a feasible career path.

Key Research Interests

My research seeks to better understand the links between human wellbeing and natural resources. Focussing on rural communities on the edge of Nyungwe Forest in mountainous southwestern Rwanda, I will investigate the dynamics of wellbeing, the values people place on ecosystem services across habitats, and priorities for enhancing local livelihoods. I am interested in how household level wellbeing research may inform mechanisms to promote long-term rural development, agricultural sustainability and provision of ecosystem services. The study hopes to build upon work performed as part of the ReDirect project, a payments for environmental services (PES) scheme currently being piloted in the region.

Research topic

Linking wellbeing research with the ecosystem services approach to natural resource management.
