Biography
I completed my first degree in Politics and International Relations at UWE in Bristol. I then moved to Amsterdam to continue my studies at the University of Amsterdam (UvA). I completed an MSc in Political Science; Conflict and Governance in 2007, focusing on neighbourhood level mediation practice in Amsterdam. After some time out, I did an MSc in Development Studies; Children’s Rights (also at the UvA) conducting 3 months research on child labour and street children in Nepal. I went on to work for IREWOC in Leiden, as a researcher writing and compiling a book about child labour in Kathmandu. Happily at this point I was given the opportunity to come to UEA and continue to research the lives of young people.

Key Research Interests
My research focuses on the families of Ghurka soldiers; specifically on the experiences of young family members, both in Nepal and here in the UK. Research will focus on social networks, transitions from education to work, the effect of migration on aspirations and achievements and the effects of migration on those who stay behind. My research will take the form of a comparative study, with fieldwork conducted both in the South East of England and the Mid-West region of Nepal.
Supervisors

Key Research Interests
I am interested in the diverse range of circumstances and factors which either help or inhibit young people from accessing opportunities such as work, health and education. I am also particularly interested in the issues facing young working people, and those children/adolescents who are unable to attend school. As well as looking at the problems facing children and young people, I am interested in understanding more about their agency and the ways in which they may be able to subvert and transcend the limitations of context. Aspirations and expectations are a key area of interest, as are peer and kin relationships, and the ways in which these influence the ability to access resources, and impact upon wellbeing.
My current research focus is on how individual characteristics affect the formation of young people’s social networks and how this in turn affects their ability to access services. My fieldwork will be conducted in Ethiopia (the exact location is still to be decided!!).
