Biography

My research concentrates on the interactions between climate and society with extensive experience in developing countries. I have a broad-base of expertise that encompasses detailed knowledge of climate models, scenario generation, climate impacts assessment and research and applied consultancies on policy and adaptation issues. I have long term research interests in Ethiopia and the Nile Basin (in 1997 I taught in the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies, Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia).

I am a founding member of the UEA Water Security Research Centre and am closely involved in the Tyndall Centre Research Programme on International Development and Climate Change.

During 2009–2011 I held a part-time secondment to the UK Department for International Development (DFID) as a Senior Research Fellow on climate change. From January to July 2011 I hold a Visiting Fellow’s position with the Australian National Climate Change Adaptation Research Facility.

I have ongoing research interests on climate change in China: on Adaptation (ACCC programme) and water use and energy/emissions (ADMIT research project).

I am co-editor of Global Environmental Change and hold editorial positions with Hydrological Sciences Journal, Climate and Development and Food Security: the science, sociology and economics of food production and access to food.

I teach mainly in Environment and Natural Resources with a focus on water resources, climate change and methods. I currently teach on two Masters level programmes:

MSc Water Security and International Development – new for 2011

MSc Climate Change and International Development – the first established Masters to fully integrate climate change and development

I am also happy to consider interesting PhD proposals, with an emphasis on interdisciplinarity.
