We welcome applications for research degrees at three levels:- Master of Arts by Research (MA)
- MPhil
- PhD
The period of study for the Masters by Research is 1 year, for the MPhil 2 years, and for the PhD 3 years, for full-time students. (For those registered part-time, the periods of study are 2, 4 and 6 years respectively). All of these degrees are taken by submission of a thesis (maximum of 40,000 words, 65,000 words and 100,000 words respectively).
All PhD candidates are registered for the MPhil in the first instance. Your supervisor will arrange for a transfer panel to be held during your first year if full-time (2 years part-time). The purpose of the panel is to ensure that students have an intellectually viable project that they will be able to achieve within 3 years of full-time study (6 years of part-time study).
Studentships
The Master of Research degree qualifies for Arts and Humanities Research Council funding under the Research Preparation Master’s Scheme, and the PhD degree qualifies for the AHRC Doctoral Awards Scheme. It is normally expected that students wishing to pursue doctoral research will take an MA in a relevant subject first. (The AHRC offers PhD funding only to students who have completed an MA.)
