UEA Senior lecturer in Creativity Peter Bloore interviewed Oscar winning screenwriter Simon Beaufoy, in front of an audience of 400 people at the fourth National Screenwriters Conference in Cheltenham last week. It was a BAFTA keynote speech event, funded by the British Academy of Film and TV Arts.
The session was entitled “the screenwriter as diplomat”, and the discussion studied the film screenplay development process, and how the screenwriter also needs to be a diplomat, a negotiator, and even a psychologist.
They discussed Simon’s many experiences as a screenwriter, specifically in the area of script development and working with others. He emphasised the art of diplomacy and negotiation; the importance of listening to notes from the financiers of the film and how to respond to them; time for reflection during the creative process; the importance of maintaining momentum on the project; and the role of trust and risk-taking in the creative process.
Peter Bloore and Simon Beaufoy were afterwards interviewed by Sky Television for their programme ‘Movie Geek’ which will be aired on November 7th on Sky One and on SkyMovies.
Peter Bloore, who joined UEA as a Senior Lecturer in Creativity in August, is awaiting the outcome of a recent major research bid from UEA to the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) to study the screenplay development; which would enable some of these themes and concepts to be researched in more detail within a longitudinal study of the development process. As well as working on research applications into creativity, Peter teaches film business on the scriptwriting strand of the Creative Writing MA; and teaches creative business planning on the MA in Creative Entrepreneurship.
The fourth annual Screenwriters Festival included several other keynote speeches and high profile interviews, including James Schamus and Aramando Ianucci.
