Readings at The Savile Club, London
Friday 3rd June 2011, Savile Club, London
Reading: 6.30 for 7.00pm | supper (optional): 8.15pm
UEA: Savilian Hisham Matar
on ‘ANATOMY OF A DISAPPEARANCE’
Chaired by Razia Iqbal, former Arts Correspondent at the BBC

Hisham Matar will read from and discuss his new novel ‘Anatomy of a Disappearance’ . Hisham is well known to many at the Savile and is the author of ‘In the Country of Men’, which was shortlisted for the Booker Prize in 2006, the Guardian First Book Award, and the US National Book Critics Circle Award. It won six international literary awards, including the Commonwealth Writers' Prize Best First Book Award for Europe and South Asia, the Royal Society of Literature Ondaatje Prize and the inaurural Arab American Book Award. It has been translated into 28 languages.
Hisham frequently writes about Libya, his home country and has been much in demand in recent months as a spokesman for the crisis there. English PEN, backed by a petition from 300 writers, have campaigned independently and through the FCO to try to discover the truth about what happened to Hisham's father who was kidnapped from Cairo 21 years ago by the Libyan government. Living with his awareness of his absent father is a central feature of Hisham's experience as a writer. This event will therefore be both topical and a rare chance to hear Hisham talk about his writing and the life experience from which he writes with such poignancy.
These events are held at The Savile Club, London (6.30pm for 7pm)
