Biography

Geoff Hicks’s research examines the politics of modern British foreign policy, focusing upon (but not restricted to) the nineteenth century.  He is particularly interested in the place of foreign policy in party politics, and in the politics of conservatism and aristocratic reaction.  His publications include ‘Peace, War and Party Politics: The Conservatives and Europe, 1846-59’ (2007).  He teaches a range of undergraduate and postgraduate modules examining British foreign policy and international history, c.1815-1960, and British politics in the nineteenth century.  He is willing to supervise doctoral theses in most areas of British foreign policy between 1815 and 1880, and aspects of British politics in the same period, as well as Conservatism and foreign policy into the twentieth century.
