From 1959 to 1963 East Anglia was also home to part of the Thor ballistic missile - the first operational ballistic missile deployed by the U.S. Air Force.

Armed with thermonuclear warheads, and operated jointly by RAF and USAF personnel, this intermediate range ballistic missile (IRBM) was based at sites such as Feltwell and North Pickenham in Norfolk and Shepherd's Grove in Suffolk.
