Orford and Orford Ness National Nature Reserve
The community of Orford and Gedgrave is a parish situated on the River Ore, close to the Suffolk coast, with a long and fascinating history http://www.orford.org.uk/
Orford Ness is one of only three major shingle landforms in Britain, and ranks among the most important shingle features in Europe. It is the only such landform that combines a shingle spit with a foreland. Orford Ness is now an internationally important nature reserve, that is managed by the National Trust which is a partner in Cold War Anglia.
During the Cold War the government research facility on Orford Ness was used for atomic weapons development and in other military research programmes, such as the over-the-horizon radar Cobra Mist.
If you worked in or around Orford Ness during the Cold War and have memories or thoughts to share, or if you want to try to find out more about the history of the area during the period, then it would be great to hear from you.
