In 1949 the government formed the Civil Defence Corps, a civilian volunteer organisation whose members were trained to aid in dealing with the aftermath of a nuclear attack. The corps was stood down in Great Britain in 1968.

The corps was administered locally by Corps Authorities, with a Corps Authority in every county. The Civil Defence Corps was joined by the Industrial Civil Defence Service, which was designed to be based in industrial or commercial undertakings which employed two hundred or more people.
