The School of History at UEA specialises in the political, social and cultural history of Britain and Europe from the Middle Ages to the present. We offer MPhil and PhD research degrees.
“ The School of History has been a wonderful place to undertake postgraduate research. There is a real sense of community between academics, graduate students and the wider student body - this makes for an engaging and lively research culture. The enthusiasm, expertise and support the department offer has been invaluable during the course of my research. ”
Jennifer Davey, current research student
The School is one of the largest groups of historians in the UK. The government's most recent Research Assessment Exercise rated 60% of our research output as of 'world-leading' quality, and specifically praised the number of research degrees awarded, our facilities, and the size of our graduate community - we have approximately 100 MA, MPhil and PhD students.
Research degrees
We welcome applications for MPhil and PhD research degrees. Typically, students begin with an MPhil research programme and receive guidance from supervisors in defining and enhancing the research area and developing research techniques. With satisfactory progress you can expect to transfer to the PhD degree at the end of your first research year.Research and supervision
Supervision is available in a wide range of areas, with particular strengths in medieval history, early modern Britain, modern Europe, modern Europe, modern British and international history, landscape and environmental history and local and regional history.Research culture
More than 80,000 historical monographs and 250 specialist journals are available in the University Library; special collections available on campus include: British Parliamentary Papers, the Library of American Civilisation, the Holloway Collection of Contemporary Cultural Records, the East Anglian Film Archive, the Zuckerman Archive, and extensive holdings in modern European (especially German and Russian) history. Library resources include access to the Times Digital Archive and Early English Books On-Line. The slide and photographic library in the School of World Art and Museology and the riches of the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts are open to all our postgraduates. The Norfolk Record Office is home to one of the richest and most extensive archive collections in England. In addition, we have special access to the archives and library of the History of Advertising Trust. The School has a track record of success with organisations such as the British Academy, the Wellcome Trust, English Heritage, the Leverhulme Trust, Suffolk Education Authority, Norfolk Mental Health Care NHS Trust and the Norwich Town Close Charity. Many of our projects are funded by UEA, too. Initiatives of this kind have enormous benefit for graduate students, who are involved at the cutting edge of new research, and have the opportunity to work alongside recognised authorities in their fields.
