Graduate School Executive
Terms of Reference
- To advise the Associate Dean (PGR) on matters relating to the FMH Graduate School.
- To ensure compliance with the University's Regulatory Frameworks and Code of Practice: Research Degree Programmes.
- To maintain an overview of recruitment to PGR programmes and to monitor and review admissions against Faculty targets.
- To advise on possible sources of external funding to support PGR students.
- To work towards an increase in the number and quality of PGR students in the Faculty.
- To approve supervisory teams, acting under delegated powers, on behalf of the Head of School.
- To monitor and approve the annual review of progress of all PGR students in the Faculty and to report thereon to the Faculty Learning, Teaching and Quality Committee (LTQC), in accordance with the Code of Practice: Research Degree Programmes.
- The AD (PGR)* to monitor and approve the annual review of progress of PGR staff candidates in the Faculty and to report thereon to the Graduate School Executive and the LTQC, in accordance with the Code of Practice: Research Degree Programmes, observing confidentiality.
- To consider and advise on academic issues relating to PGR students, in accordance with the University's Regulatory Framework and Code of Practice: Research Degree Programmes, rmaking appropriate referrals.
- To consider and approve such matters as are delegated in accordance with the University's Regulatory Framework and Code of Practice: Research Degree Programmes (to be undertaken by the AD (PGR).
- To monitor the PGR student experience, including in the light of internal and external surveys (eg PRES) and to bring forward proposals and recommendations to appropriate bodies.
- To monitor facilities available to students within the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences and to bring forward proposals and recommendations as appropriate.
- To approve the FMH Personal and Professional Development (PPD) programme.
- To maintain an overview of, to monitor and to keep under review the development, organisation and delivery of the PPD programme to PGR students.
- To promote equality of opportunity for PGR students.
- To consider matters relating to PGR Programmes referred to it by the PGR Executive or its Chair, the PGR Programmes Policy Group or its Chair, the FMH Executive or its Chair, the Faculty LTQC or its Chair and the Research, Enterprise and Engagement Committee or its Chair.
- To consider matters relating to PGR Programmes referred to it by PGR students or their representative bodies.
- The Ad (PGR) to liaise with similar PGR Groups in the SCI, SSF and HUM.
(*The AD (PGR) shall not consider any specific staff or student matters pertaining to the School of which the AD (PGR) is a member and shall normally invite the AD (Research) to undertake such consideration – providing that the AD (Research) is not also a member of the same School as the AD (PGR).)
Frequency of meetings
The Group will meet 6 times per session.
Status
As a sub-group of the Faculty LTQC and of the Research, Enterprise and Engagement (REE) Committee of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, the FMH PGR Students Group reports to both these Committees.
Through the Chair of the Group, (AD (PGR) –FMH), the Group will keep the PGR Programmes Policy Group informed and will bring forward issues, papers and/or reports, as appropriate.
Reporting
The Group will provide:
- a written annual report to the Faculty Research, Enterprise and Engagement Committee
- a written annual report to the Faculty Learning Teaching and Quality Committee with particular reference to Terms of Reference 7, 8, and 16, observing appropriate confidentiality with regard to Term of Reference 8
- regular oral and/or written reports to the PGR Programmes Policy Group via the Associate Dean (PGR).

- Director of Learning and Teaching for PGR in each of the constituent Schools of the Faculty (viz, Allied Health Professions; Norwich Medical School; and Nursing Sciences)
- PGR Associate for Doctor of Medicine programme in the Norwich Medical School
- PGR Associate for the Doctoral programme in Clinical Psychology, Norwich Medical School
- Chair of the Graduate Studies Committee (Institute for Food Research)
- Associate Dean for Research, Enterprise and Engagement
- Associate Dean for Learning, Teaching & Quality
- PPD Co-ordinator
Members
- PGR Senior Manager with responsibility for FMH
- PGR Manager with responsibility for FMHPGR Senior Administrative Assistant with responsibility for FMH
- 3 student** representatives including 1 staff/student member
**Student members shall not be party to any consideration of individual PGR student or staff candidates or any consideration in which an individual PGR student or staff candidate might be identifiable.
Term of office
Normally three years, for members.
