Biography

I qualified as a Registered General Nurse in 1986 at the Whittington Hospital, London, after working as a staff nurse in Rheumatology & Orthopaedics in Norfolk, I qualified as a midwife at the Norfolk & Norwich Hospital in 1986.  I held posts in the acute hospital Trust and community areas as a Senior Midwife until 1996 when I worked for the Soldiers, Sailors and Air Force Families Association being attached to the British Forces Germany developing a Community Midwifery service for service men's wives in Germany.  This post involved liaison with German secondary care maternity services and primary British Forces Healthcare. 

My professional development includes, a Diploma in Professional Studies in Midwifery, Bsc (Hons) Health Studies and an MA in Education for Health & Social Care Practice from the University of Sheffield.

Teaching Interests

My first Midwifery teaching post was at the University of Hull, I came to UEA in 2001 and have been Course Director for the Bsc (Hons) Midwifery programme since 2002. I have experience in pre and post registration education and inter professional learning programmes and utilise a wide range of approaches to learning and teaching, including enquiry based learning.

I completed the ‘Safer People Handling Trainers Course’ in March 2011 and work with a team of lecturers in the school to deliver all the manual handling training for pre-registration students in the school and for some programmes across Faculty.

I am experienced in curriculum development having led curriculum development and implementation of the BSC (Hons) Midwifery programme.

External Activities and Indicators of Esteem

  • I am an experienced member of Examination Boards and have been an external examiner for midwifery programmes since 2009.
  • On several occasions I have been an external panel member for NMC validation events.
