Biography

Diane joined the School of Health Sciences in October 2016 as a Lecturer in Nursing Sciences (Adult).

Career summary

Diane trained as nurse, and on completion, specialised in respiratory care before moving into Midwifery.

In 1991 she joined the Norfolk Arthritis Register, a longitudinal observational study of inflammatory polyarthritis aiming to establish the cause, incidence and outcome of IP. Her research nurse and managerial roles provided extensive research experience.

Moving to the UEA, Diane completed her PhD in 2016: 'Understanding, recognising and preventing dehydration in older residents living in care homes: a mixed methods study'. Diane’s research interests are in hydration and nutritional care in older people living in care homes, working on a number of projects with Dr Lee Hooper and Professor Ailsa Welch.

Research studies include:

  1. Making Drinking Fun Study. An activities-based programmes supporting residents’ drinking in care homes.

  2. Dehydration Recognition in our Elders, DRIE, http://driestudy.appspot.com/. Investigating the diagnostic accuracy of commonly used signs and symptoms of dehydration in older people.

  3. Eating and Drinking Well in Dementia, EDWINA. Systematic reviews of interventions aiming to support people with dementia to eat and drink well.

  4. Thinking about Drinking. A qualitative study exploring the views of residents, their families and carers regarding hydration care in care homes.

  5. Scoping review of nutritional and hydration guidelines for care homes.

  6. Systematic review investigating the impact of a Mediterranean diet on musculoskeletal health.
