The British Cinema History Research Project
About the Project
In 2001 the Film and TV Studies Department at the University of East Anglia was awarded a substantial grant under the AHRB's Resource Enhancement Scheme. There are two main strands of the project, each of which is designed to encourage wider use of a major resource in the study of British film history through the creation of online materials.
The BCHRP has produced a detailed online index to Kinematograph Weekly for the years from May 1955 to February 1971 when the magazine folded, together wtih sample material from 1915 and from 1943-1945. While other sources provide references for reviews in Kine Weekly, for the first time this index also allows researchers to trace the history of individual cinemas, towns, personnel, production companies, studios and subjects as they are mentioned in the magazines many articles and news items. For more details of Kinematograph Weekly, and access to the online index, follow the Kine Weekly link on the menu.
Through a unique agreement between the BECTU History Project, the BFI Library and the British Cinema History Research Project, the BCHRP has been able to make transcriptions of a selection of over 80 interviews comprising over 250 hours of recordings. Over 60 of these are available online in a fully searchable format. For more details of the interviews available both here and at the BFI Library, and for access to the online interviews, follow the BECTU link on the menu.
