Norwich Academic Training

Welcome to clinical academic training in Norwich involving UEA and local partner NHS Trusts. There is significant investment in clinical academic posts between UEA and the Norfolk and Norwich University hospital. The clinical training pathways for clinical and other health professions are vital to us to provide our future community of senior clinical academic staff.

For clinical staff, the pathways were established by a joint working party of the UK Clinical Research Collaboration and the NHS Modernising Medical Careers initiative set up in response to recommendations within the Walport Report.

For other health professions including nurses, midwives and allied health professionals, the pathways follows publication of a report of the UKCRC Subcommittee for Nurses in Clinical Research in collaboration with Modernising Nursing Careers.

Nationally, these training programmes are managed by the National Institute for Health Research.

The GP ACF scheme in Norwich
The East of England Deanery and the Primary Care Group at the Norwich Medical School offer three academic GP specialist training posts each year, usually commencing August (12 academic GP registrars at any one time). All these posts are recognised by the NIHR for academic general practice training, and supported by a local ACF programme. For more information CLICK HERE [WORD 38KB].

A Norwich Academic Training Office manages UEA’s involvement in these pathways under the leadership of Professor Alastair Watson. He is supported by an administrative team who help in the liaison with NHS Trusts, the Deanery and with NIHR (the Norwich Academic Training Office).
