Career Summary

Following surgical training in the Royal Air Force, I began my academic career in the Department of Surgery at the Welsh National School of Medicine where I developed my clinical and research interests in breast disease, malignant melanoma and soft tissue sarcoma. I moved to Liverpool in 1982 as Senior Lecturer in Surgery where I developed the Breast Unit as a multidisciplinary unit. I eventually became Professor of Surgery. At Liverpool, I became involved in curriculum development and led the introduction of a new curriculum for the undergraduate medical degree. I moved to UEA in 2001 as Inaugural Dean of the new medical school.

Research

My current research is focused on the outcomes of the new MB BS degree particularly with regard to the development of professionalism within the medical students. We are also studying the factors on admission that predict success in the course and examining the effect of specific learning disabilities on future career progression.

Teaching Interests

In addition to teaching on the MB BS medical degree where I take overall responsibility for the assessments as Chair of the Assessment Group, I am module leader for the Leading Curriculum Development module on the MClinEd degree.
