Career summary
From 2002-2003, I worked as a planning officer in the Ministry of Health and Population in Lilongwe, Malawi as part of the Overseas Development Institute Fellowship scheme. I have been a health economics researcher at the University of East Anglia since 2003, focusing mostly on the economics of genetic technologies and disorders as well as other public health interventions. My current research as an NIHR Research Fellow focuses on the economics of paediatric Cystic Fibrosis in the east of England.
Key Research Interests
My current research is investigating the cost of illness and cost-effectiveness of cystic fibrosis programmes in the Eastern Region of England. The main perspective of the study is that of the NHS. The first stage of the research will be a cost of illness study, using data from the East of England Cystic Fibrosis Database (EECFD). This is a retrospective analysis with the study population being the paediatric CF population in 1998. The data gathered from this first stage will form a baseline for the second stage: modelling the cost-effectiveness of cystic fibrosis care in the region. The COI study will help to inform cost parameters, where estimates of effectiveness measures (height and weight z-scores, and lung function (FEV% predicted)) will be derived from the EECFD. Decision analysis and markov modelling is used. Sub-analysis on the impact on cost-effectiveness of the use of rhDNase in patients ≤ 6 years old compared to current practice (8 years old +) will also take place. The final stage of the research will analyse the different shared care scenarios within the region, using a decision model. The costs and effectiveness will be analysed within each shared-care cohort.The proposed research will detail the costs and effectiveness of cystic fibrosis care in the eastern region. There are several interesting methodological and statistical issues including modelling using small numbers, and modelling chronic diseases
