Key Research Interests

My research interests centre on Cognitive Biases arising in Emotion, particularly the effects of emotional disorders such as anxiety.  The research seeks to increase understanding of cognitive biases and more particularly to develop techniques for modifying or eliminating biases that are detrimental to mental well-being, or that might alter drinking and smoking behaviour in alcoholics and smokers. In addition, the effects such psychological interventions on mood and disease activity in chronic illness (eg Rheumatoid Arthritis) is being addressed. This work involves collaborations with researchers around the UK, in Australia and the USA.  I hold a Visiting Scientist Position at the MRC Cognition and Brain Sciences Unit, Cambridge

Teaching Interests

My background is in teaching Cognitive and Comparative and Biological Psychology at the Universities of Sussex and Brighton and at the Open University, with a specialism in Cognition and Emotion.  Since joining the UEA my role is to take overall responsibility for the Psychology Input for Medical Students within the School of Medicine, Health Policy and Practice.  As well as a strong emphasis on communication skills, the aim is to provide medical degree students with useful information about important psychological processes concerned with diagnosis, care and support of both patients and the medical practitioners themselves.  One strand of teaching considers psychological issues from the standpoint of the patient, such as their emotional responses and well-being, imparting information and compliance with treatment and life style interventions.  A complementary strand, considers the doctor, such as the psychological biases inherent in the problem solving task of diagnosis, dealing with exposure to trauma, death and stress.
