Key Research Interests

Enteropathogenic (EPEC) and enterohaemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC) are major causes of infant diarrhoea. EHEC infection can also lead to the development of potentially fatal haemolytic uraemic syndrome (HUS). Major bacterial virulence factors include a type III secretion system which mediates translocation of bacterial effector proteins into the host cell. These effectors lead to extensive modification of host cell signalling which ultimately results in diarrhoea. EHEC also produce Shiga toxins (Stx) which are associated with HUS and highly cytotoxic to renal microvasculature. Our research aims at understanding EPEC- and EHEC-mediated pathogenesis by using in vitro and ex vivo model systems that closely mimic the environment in the human gut. Particular interests include Stx translocation across the intestinal epithelial barrier and the influence of low oxygen on virulence gene expression.
