Key Research Interests
A review project “Economic Evaluation as part of Systematic Review, funded by the US Agency of Health Research and Quality with USD 240,000. Dr. Niessen is co-PI responsible for the international comparative component. The project is starting in September 2008.
A WHO-funded project “Health worker effectiveness in child health” of USD 100,000 to model the health worker effectiveness for child survival. The PI is Dr. Niessen with Erasmus U, JHSPH and the Dutch Royal Tropical Institute as participants. The project is starting in December 2008.
A GSK-funded project “Economic Positioning of Malaria Vaccines” of USD 140,000 to review existing economic malaria models and to develop a new model. The PI is Dr. Niessen. It has started in 2007 and is ongoing with Erasmus U and JHSPH participating. A follow-up project is planned to evaluate the malaria vaccine in five countries.
The Dutch Environmental Assessment Agency funded the project “Integrated Health Modeling” of USD 180,000 to support international reporting for UNEP and other UN agencies. The model has been applied for the WHO/UNICEF GAPP initiative to evaluate preventive interventions, immunizations and case management to reduce the pneumonia burden. Dr. Niessen is the PI. Duration: 2006-2008.
The Dutch MoH funded the project “Welfare effects of affluent diseases” and is carried out by Erasmus with Dutch National Planning Office (CPB), Netherlands. It gives an overview and theoretical framework on economic assessments, in comparison with approaches in the USA. The budget is USD 65,000. Prof. F. Rutten is the PI and Dr. Niessen is a senior member of the research team. The project started in 2005 and ended in 2007.
The Dutch National Institute of Public Health (RIVM) funded the project “Integrated Macro-Modeling of Health Prevention and Cure in support of the Dutch National Health Forecast 2006 of the Netherlands. Dr. Niessen has been the PI. It started in 2005-and is still ongoing. The budget is 50,000.
