Biography

Lee is currently a National Institute for Health Research Career Development Fellow, and will be using the funding to carry out research to identify the early stages of dehydration in older people (January 2012 to December 2014).

See http://driestudy.appspot.com/ for details of the DRIE (Dehydration Recognition In our Elders) Study.

She is a dietitian, nutritionist and systematic reviewer with a long term interest in the nutrition and hydration of older people. She is an expert systematic reviewer and has developed and managed many systematic reviews. Lee has been an editor for the Cochrane Heart Group for 10 years, and was an editor of the Cochrane Oral Health Group for 5 years, and regularly referees systematic reviews for top medical and nutrition journals.

Lee works as a Senior Lecturer in Research Synthesis and Nutrition in the Norwich Medical School at the University of East Anglia and has a BSc in Biochemistry, PhD (University of Manchester) and current dietetic registration. She worked as a dietitian in the National Health Service for ten years, with extensive experience of community health promotion and cardiovascular health. Lee moved to research in 2000 and has since published over 60 peer-reviewed publications, mainly in the area of the effects of dietary change on health. Her publications have been cited over 1400 times (with an average citation per publication of over 26, and h-index of 18).

Lee supports the world Health Organization Nutrition Guidance Expert Advisory Group (NUGAG), with advice and support in systematic reviewing methodology. As well as being a Cochrane editor, she is an editor of Quality in Aging, was awarded Ibex Award by British Dietetic Association (2005), and was a member of the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) Partners Council.

Career Summary:-

Lee worked as a dietitian in the National Health Service for ten years, developing and running the dietetic heart health programme in Shropshire (a combination of health promotion and clinical dietetics for people with diagnosed cardiovascular disease). I trained in systematic reviewing in response to patient questions about the effects of the dietary changes they were making on their long term health. I formally moved into research in 2000 and have since published over 60 peer-reviewed publications, most of which are systematic reviews or evidence-based dietetic guidelines. My interests, aside from systematic reviewing, are in hydration, food and older people, and diet and cardiovascular disease.

Teaching Interests

I enjoy teaching and cover a range of topics (including nutrition topics, systematic review and searching skills, and writing without plagiarism), levels (both undergraduate and postgraduate), contexts (with individuals in supervision sessions and with groups in lectures, seminars and workshops) and courses (on the MBBS, a third year School of Biologiy course, MRes and MSc courses). I also teach in other contexts, for example a workshop on structured electronic searching within the EURRECA (EU network of excellence) network to academics getting involved in systematic reviewing, the Surrey Masters in Nutrition course (on systematic reviews, and on fat and CVD), and the Leeds Course in Clinical Nutrition, for health care professionals wanting to know more about nutrition.

I teach using a variety of resources, technologies and techniques, including: classic lectures backed with PowerPoint slides (eg MBBS nutrition lectures, BIO lectures); facilitation (eg Inter-Professional Learning and problem based learning seminars); seminars with greater student involvement and discussion (eg systematic review and nutrition seminars); and skills training (eg around searching skills and nutritional assessment).

Although I am happy with teaching in any of these contexts, I am most comfortable with teaching that incorporates several styles and depths of learning experiences. For example, within the MRes I deliver a theoretical background to the theory and practice of systematic reviews, then the students (with my guidance) appraise reviews of others, I use practical exercises to get them to practice the skills used within reviews, and then to appraise others reviews with less guidance. Throughout this process the students are involved in discussions that explore and deepen their understanding, and are encouraged to ask for specific information on any issues that they are not clear about (for example, statistical topics). There is informal formative appraisal throughout the process, and summative assessment of a submitted review protocol (that in itself demonstrates skills such as specifying the specific question, planning the methodology and developing a structured electronic search strategy). This process allows students to become fully involved in a topic, progress from theoretical aspects of a topic, to understanding and development of their own skills, then use of those skills in a controlled and supported way.

Teaching is most satisfying when students connect with the topic and take something that they value away from the experience, which is one of the huge pleasures in supervision of graduate students. In more formal contexts I aim to ensure that evaluation through open discussion during teaching sessions, through formal evaluation processes and through exam performance all feed back and help to mould future teaching.
