Key Research Interests
I have been at UEA since October 2011 and my research here is centred on the use of genomic data in clinical and public health microbiology (Ref 1 below). Within the translational microbiology group at UEA we are optimising nucleic acid extraction techniques from clinical samples and in collaboration with TGAC using pioneering bioinformatic analysis to identify and type pathogens. A major challenge is to predict the antibiotic susceptibility of bacteria and to understand the “normal flora” of sterile sites. I also maintain a keen interest in the use of new technology in countries with developing economies (Ref 2)
In the past: my research has described the influence of reduced ciprofloxacin resistance on clinical outcome in typhoid fever patients (Ref 3); linked resistance plasmids and virulence in Salmonella Typhi (Refs 4-6); I selected the isolate and annotated the plasmid of the first Salmonella to be genome sequenced (Ref 7); my first PhD student developed the MLST scheme for Salmonella (Ref 8) and my most recent helped develop the transposon insertion method known as TraDIS (Ref 9) and at the HPA I oversaw the introduction of DNA based typing methods (Ref10)
