Career Summary

I studied medicine at St Bartholomew’s Hospital, London and qualified in 1982. My junior hospital posts were in London and Birmingham. In 1985, I became registrar (Clinical Pharmacology and Cardiology) and then 1990 Senior registrar (Cardiology) both at the Hammersmith Hospital. 1987-1990 MRC Clinical Training Fellow, Clinical Research Centre, Harrow, Middx. Honorary Senior Registrar, Dept. of Medicine, Hammersmith Hospital.

In 1994 I became the first Professor of Clinical Cardiology at University of Sheffield and Honorary consultant cardiologist. I built a group which became a full academic department of the university in 2008, which I headed. The group was awarded an NIHR Biomedical Research Unit in 2007 of which I was Director.

In 2011 became Dean of Norwich Medical School at the University of East Anglia and honorary consultant cardiologist at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital. In 2011 I moved to become Dean of the Medical School at UEA.

As a Cardiologist I have had interests in interventional cardiology and heart disease in pregnancy.

Academic Interests

Vascular biological science and the innate immune response in blood vessels, and its application to the science of atherosclerosis and coronary artery disease have been consistent interests and more recently the biology of pulmonary hypertension. Basic studies of the inflammatory basis of vascular responses have been the main-stay of research with an emphasis on early translation of studies in man. I have had a major interest in the role of IL-1 in vascular disease.

Clinical Interests

All aspects of coronary artery disease, especially the pathological basis of myocardial infarction. Heart disease in pregnancy

Teaching Interests

I have been training programme director for cardiology in South Yorkshire. Currently, I am HEI representative on the East of England LETB.
