Career summary

After my PhD and post-doctoral work at the MRC Dunn Clinical Nutrition Centre in Cambridge, I worked at the University of Surrey before moving to Head the Molecular Nutrition Group at Unilever Research. In 2004 I joined the Norwich Medical School at UEA to build and lead the Nutrition Department.

Key Research Interests

My research programme is focused on bioactive compounds present in plants, with interest in their metabolism, bioavailability and health effects, using a combination of cell/in vitro models and human studies, and working in collaboration with colleagues both nationally and internationally. On-going projects include research on:

  • Cardiovascular benefits of flavonoids and other bioactives including trials and epidemiological association studies with the Harvard School of Public Health (Rimm) and Tufts (Jacques)
  • Factors affecting the in vivo bioavailability of Isoflavones and other flavonoids
  • Molecular mechanisms of flavonoids
  • Effects of genotype on flavonoid metabolism
