Career summary
Susanne worked as a teacher in Biology and Chemistry from 1991-1995 in a secondary school in Sweden. She then worked as postdoctoral researcher in the Gastrointestinal Laboratory at UEA until 2002, specialising in calcium signalling. Susanne joined the Centre of Interprofessional Practice in October 2002 as a Research Associate with the aim of developing a pilot IPL programme at UEA. She was appointed Lecturer in Interprofessional Practice in the Centre in August 2004, Centre Director in 2005 and Senior Lecturer in Interprofessional Practice in 2008.
Key Research Interests
Susanne’s main research interests are related to interprofessional attitudes, where they stem from, the impact of interprofessional learning (IPL) on these attitudes and how they affect team working and patient care. The Centre has developed the Attitudes to Health Professionals Questionnaire (AHPQ) which is now available online. This is a validated tool which the Centre uses to collate quantitative data about students' views of different healthcare professionals. Results from analysis of these data have helped in further investigating interprofessional attitudes through semi-structured interviews with students.
Together with Dr Scott Reeves in Toronto, Canada, Susanne is exploring interprofessional facilitation with the aim of defining key attributes that comprise an effective IPL facilitator.
Other areas of interest include communication within healthcare, and the development of professional identity.

Teaching Interests
Together with colleagues in the Centre, Susanne has developed an IPL programme that is offered to all healthcare students at UEA, which runs throughout their professional training. The overall aim of the IPL programme is to foster the skills, knowledge, attitudes and behaviour that facilitate effective interprofessional teamworking. Susanne is involved in:
- facilitating students that participate in the IPL programme;
- giving lectures to students related to interprofessional education;
- training facilitators involved in the IPL programme delivered by the Centre.
She is external examiner for the IPL programme provided by Sheffield Hallam University and University of Southampton.
