Microbes fight back: the growing problem of antimicrobial resistance

Prof Laura Bowater - Norwich Medical School

Julian Study Centre lecture theatre, UEA

We rely on antibiotics to fight life-threatening infections, improve the odds of survival after routine operations and protect the animals we farm for food. But it seems that we have taken these valuable resources for granted, with more and more antibiotics becoming ineffective against the microbial pathogens that cause disease. This talk will examine how we ended up in this situation, and what can be done to avert a dystopian future in which we have no effective antibiotics to combat the 'rise of the superbugs’.
