A Day in the Death of Joe Egg

The Garage, 4 Chapelfield North, Norwich, NR2 1NY

Josephine has been severely disabled from birth and is confined to a wheelchair. Her mother Sheila still lives in hope, and dreams of the day Joe might be cured; her schoolteacher father Bri appears to have given up, and hides his despair behind increasingly bleak and non-PC jokes. The couple walk a daily tightrope, as they struggle to maintain their affection for each other while caring full-time for Joe.

Well meaning but ignorant family and friends interfere - the results of the interference pushing the couple towards fracture, chaos and an action which none of them may ever recover from.

A Day in the Death of Joe Egg is a very funny black comedy, yet it manages to walk the tightrope between humour and heartbreak; with it, Nichols manages to confront taboo subjects such as children with disabilities and euthanasia, yet does so in a way that makes one laugh. Watching the play one feels torn between laughter and guilt - but above all, one comes away glad tha the courageous questions have been asked, even if answers are yet to be found.

Written in 1967, A Day in the Death of Joe Egg expresses language and sentiments that make modern audiences flinch. Goblin Market Theatre is re-visiting the play in conjunction with The Hamlet Chentre Norwich, to ask: how far have attitudes towards the disabled come since the place was written? Are care systems in place to prevent Sheila and Bri's predicament happening today?

This performance will be followed by a Q&A session attended by cast members, the director and The Hamlet Centre family members.

Ticket prices: £12 / £8 concessions / groups of 9+ £5 per ticket.
