Green Office Week 14th – 18th May 2012
Green Office Week (GOW) is an action-packed week full of fun and simple ideas to make your office greener. Visit http://www.greenofficeweek.eu to see what's happening each day and then find ways to fit these environmental ideas into your office. You can make a real difference to the environment by making a few small, practical changes such as ensuring you use the right recycling bin to avoiding the need to travel by holding an on-line “Elluminate” meeting. Elluminate is an online collaboration tool, it is available via Blackboard or as a stand-alone web solution. You can create real-time sessions or rooms to which participants are invited, whether they are internal or external to UEA. Elluminate sessions can be used for a variety of purposes in teaching, research and administration as well as public and community engagement. For more information visit: http://www.uea.ac.uk/is/lt/tools/Elluminate or read the case studies below showing how “Ellumanate” is reducing the cost and carbon associated with business travel.
Case Study 1: ACT Travelwise (ACTTW) Eastern Region Goes Virtual
ACT TravelWise is the UK’s premier network for all organisations working to promote sustainable travel. The Association is divided into regions and each organises regular meetings which provide opportunities for networking, knowledge sharing and discussion of current issues. The Eastern region which has some 50 plus members spread across Norfolk, Suffolk, Cambridgeshire, Bedfordshire and Bucks is Chaired by Dawn Dewar, UEA’s Transport Co-ordinator. The idea for virtual meetings was prompted by:
· Reduction in attendance at meetings following efficiency savings in many local authorities;
o Less staff but not lesser workloads
o No or little budget to cover business travel costs
o Time restraints; more difficult to find time to attend out of office meeting
o Competing priorities
· No ACTTW funding to support regional meetings; hosts had to bear any meeting associated costs (room hire, tea/coffee etc.)
· As sustainable travel champions members would wish to “practice what they preach”
Thus the idea for virtual meetings ticked a number of boxes and April was chosen for the inaugural virtual meeting. “Hosted” by UEA and using “Elluminate” the University’s chosen online collaboration tool, available via Blackboard or as a stand-alone web solution ACTTW Eastern region went “virtual” with huge success.
Dawn said “there were concerns about ability to log on, firewall protection and picture & sound quality but these proved to be unfounded and to be fair for this the first meeting we did keep it simple choosing not to use all the tools available with the software”
Dawn went on “we unfortunately didn’t ask people to tell us how they would have travelled to the University so we cannot accurately measure their CO2 emissions or transport cost savings but time savings are possible and this one, two hour meeting would have been equivalent to over a week of staff days”
The on-line meeting attended by 10 members could have achieved maximum savings as follows:
• A travel time saving of 28.5 hours
• A total mileage saving of 922 miles (based on travel by road)
• A saving of 6.2 work days (4 people would have lost a full day and 6 a half day from the office)
• A saving of £368.00, for travel (based on an allowance of 40p per mile)
• CO2 savings of 189.9 kg (based on small car, lone driver)
These are examples and estimates only.
The feedback from the meeting was very positive with all those taking part keen to meet this way in the future. There are members, particularly those new to the association or region, who would still like to retain face-to-face get together and therefore 2 meetings each year will be virtual.
Bus Service 40 to Operate During the Summer Vacation Period
First Bus Company have confirmed they will extend the operating period of Service 40 which was introduced earlier this year to replace First Bus Service 21/22. Bus service 40 serves those living in the areas of Bowthorpe, West Earlham and parts of the Dereham Road.Introduced as a term time only service the University and in particular members of the UEA/First Bus Focus group had lobbied to have Service 40 extended (even with a limited timetable) to provide a service during vacation periods; First Bus Company have now confirmed there will be a vacation period timetable in place from 11 June 2012.
Sarah Lane, Careers & Employability and a member of the Focus Group on hearing the news said “I am so happy that First have eventually listened to their users and believe the Focus Group made it easier to communicate how important this service is to staff and students at UEA’
University Passengers to Benefit from 2.6m Bus Grant
Norfolk County Council with the support of the University has secured £2.6m of Government funding for a series of major public transport improvements that will make bus travel faster for passengers, visitors and commuters in Norwich. The package of improvements will also cut pollution, boost the number of people travelling by bus and park and ride by more than three million over the next few years and improve bus punctuality. The package will deliver around 30 projects and brings benefits to bus users, cyclists, pedestrians, coach, taxi and car users. For the University the funding will provide in particular improved information systems including “real time displays” at bus stops which allows passengers to see when their bus will arrive based on data retrieved via GPS systems on board vehicles rather than timetable information.
Dawn Dewar said “the University is delighted the bid has been successful; many of the projects such as bus priority measures will take place off campus but these will ensure improved reliability and timekeeping for University passengers whilst the real time information system is something many bus users at UEA have campaigned for”.
