Education for sustainable development is education that encourages participants to understand the complexities of, synergies between, and issues threatening planetary sustainability; and to understand and assess their own values and those of the society in which they live. ESD seeks to engage people in negotiating a sustainable future, making decisions and acting upon them.
2005-2014 is the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (DESD).
