Estates & Buildings Division are committed to supporting the University's Environmental Policy and is responsible for the campus wide recycling programme.
Waste Management & Recycling
In 2004 the university took a bold decision and started segregating dry mixed recyclables from its general waste stream. The segregating of items such as paper, cardboard, plastic bottles and steel/ aluminium cans is still the basis of the waste disposal today. This segregating has meant the university has achieved a recycling rate of over 20% for many years.
An increase in recycling facilities, better promotion of the benefits of recycling and the ability to record data through bin weighing equipment installed onto the collection vehicles means in 2010 the University diverted 40% of its waste from landfill; an increase of 10% on 2009 figures.
In order to maintain and/or improve on our success we ask you try to follow the 3 rules of waste; reduce, reuse, recycle. Landfill should be the last resort. We have put together a short presentation to help you understand how to dispose of waster at UEA. Waste Guide
In order to maintain a comfortable working environment, cleaning staff will empty all office recycling bins on a daily basis. Office bins containing all landfill items i.e. food wrappers, plastic, etc. need to be disposed of personally within general waste bins that can be found on every floor and are clearly labelled.
All glass items should be taken to the bottle banks adjacent to Congregation Hall, on the West Car Park and behind the shops opposite the Library. Glass bins are also located at most external bin locations.
Confidential Waste
There are blue Shred Station confidential waste bins located in all buildings. As there is a considerable cost difference between secure destruction and recycling, please ensure only papers considered confidential are placed in these bins. All other papers should be placed in your office bin which is for recycling waste. There is a bin located in ITCS reception specifically for CD/DVD and tapes containing confidential material.
All material is shredded on site before being taken for recycling.
Confidential waste will be collected on the following dates:
