UEA has long been a leader in environmental research and is committed to reflecting this in how we care for our campus and the surrounding environment. Since the early 1990s we have invested in energy efficient buildings – Our Elizabeth Fry Building completed in 1994 remains one of the most energy efficient in the country. In the late 1990s we began our journey developing innovative approaches to energy generation and efficiency
– Our combined heat and power plant commissioned in 1999 runs at 86% efficiency compared to the usual 35-40% in commercial power generation. In 2008 we appointed a Sustainability Manager to lead more comprehensive and systematic environmental performance improvement and we now have a team of experts making environmental and financial gains across the University.
Our second annual Environmental Report (2011) describes some of our achievements and lists all relevant Key Performance Indicators. You will find more information about on-going actions throughout the Environment and Sustainability web pages.
In 2011 UEA was awarded a 'first class degree' in the People and Planet Green League demonstrating our continual improvement from a 2:1 in 2010. In 2012 UEA retained a 'first class degree' in the People and Planet Green League demonstrating our continual improvement.
