Our Environmental Impacts

UEA has a community of over 14,000 students and around 2,600 staff (full-time equivalent) undertaking and supporting research, teaching and learning. Our 145 hectare campus includes residences and energy generation plants; and hosts a public swimming pool and art gallery. As a result of the varied activities taking place on campus, the UEA has complex and wide-ranging impacts on the environment.

An Initial Environmental Review (IER) published in Oct 2009 describes these impacts.

A Summary of Environmental Impacts can be downloaded here.

Work is on-going to establish and refine some environmental baselines e.g. biodiversity and carbon emissions, from which we can improve our monitoring and measuring of environmental impacts.

The IER formed the basis of our work to implement an Environmental Management System (EMS) allowing us to identify, control and report on our environmental performance and management activity. We have prioritised our actions; a process we’ve recorded in our Aspects Register, and set out commitments to improving our environmental performance in our Environmental Policy. These are updated and reviewed annually.
