Our Energy And Climate Top Tips
No matter how our energy is generated, maximising efficiency is always best, so please…
• Turn off lights and equipment at the end of the day or when they are obviously not in use.
• Turn off computer monitors and other equipment rather than leaving them on standby.
• If possible, turn off the heating before opening the window.
• If you have a heating problem don’t turn on your electric heater contact the Estates Helpdesk on 592121 helpdesk@uea.ac.uk. The use of non-authorised heating sources such as an electric portable heater is prohibited to ensure that areas are kept safe and that energy usage is controlled in line with our carbon reduction targets. In addition the ‘Electricity at Work Regulations’ require initial safety testing and subsequent routine safety testing of all such devices. The cost both financially and environmentally of using electricity for heating is adverse.
• Be aware of our heating and cooling guidelines; these provide detailed guidance on how you can keep warm in winter and cool in summer.
• Join the CarbonCrew and be an energy efficiency champion (find out more here).
• Other energy savings tips appear on posters across campus and more help is available here.
Student Switch Off
The Student Switch off is a not-for-profit campaign which aims to encourage students to save energy when living in University halls of residence. The results of the campaign are directly measurable through electricity meters in the halls of residence. This means that we can demonstrate exactly how effective the actions we are promoting are in encouraging pro-environmental behavioural change. The campaign was set up by Dr Neil Jennings as a pilot project at the University of East Anglia in 2007.
