The Built Environment

UEA has a wide variety of buildings on campus from the 16th Century Earlham Hall, the listed teaching wall building and landmark Ziggurats (designed by Sir Denys Lasdun), to Norman Foster’s Sainsbury Centre for the Visual Arts. We strive to make all our new buildings visually enhance the campus and promote the principles of sustainable design, technology, and operation and we have the largest concentration of leading low energy buildings in the world.

We are applying an environmental review process to every project and controlling our maintenance activities (e.g. chemical, waste and contractor management) through our Environmental Management System, and monitoring building performance through our Building Management System (one of the largest in the country).

Our key objective is to effectively control the environmental impacts of facilities maintenance, campus development and refurbishments.

We have set ourselves an on-going target for all new build projects to achieve BREEAM excellent
. (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method for buildings). A refurbishment BREEAM model is expected in early 2012 and a refurbishment target will be set once this has been reviewed.

Our most significant impact from our maintenance activities is ozone-depletion from emissions of refrigerants and we have set a target of zero emissions of R22 refrigerant by July 2014 to reduce these. See our Other Emissions to Air pages for more information.
