Green Impact Awards
2012
And the winners are ............
Estates once again led the way in the Green Impact Awards achieving Gold standard for the third year running. The Library CarbonCrew volunteers came very close to achieving Silver and their efforts brought them special recognition with an award for the “Best Performing Team”. Biology, ITCS and Edith Cavell who have named their team the “environmentally caring bunch” all received Bronze awards.
Allison Carroll, LIB Carbon Crew said “We are delighted to be awarded ‘best performing team’ in the Green Impact Awards. It reflects the hard work that the Library Carbon Crew team have put in over the past year to make the building more sustainable. It has been challenging, fun and rewarding and I would highly recommend that other buildings around UEA create teams and take part in next year’s Green Impacts”
The awards, initially launched at Bristol University in 2008, are part of an environmental accreditation scheme to make University workplaces greener; there are some 42 UK universities actively taking part.
Environmental Officer Richard Bettle explained the scheme. “Each team have a bespoke toolkit designed to help them green their building. The award criteria are clear and easy to implement and it is likely some of the actions will be in place already. As a minimum teams need to demonstrate compliance with the 20 bronze criteria, however the silver and gold criteria are optional. Richard continued “I am really pleased to see so many of our buildings participating and the level of accreditation is rising year on year with the highest level of gold achievers so far”.
The scheme is being run locally on campus, but managed across all participating universities by the Environmental Association for Universities and Colleges (EAUC). It is part of the wider Degrees Cooler Programme which the university is also signed up to. To find out more and take part, please contact Matt Taylor at matt.taylor@uea.ac.uk
