Go Green Week 2013 - 11th - 19th February

Go Green Week is People & Planets annual national week of action on climate change in Schools, Collages and Universities.

Go Green Cycle

As part of Go Green week, Security greeted staff, students and UEA visitors with cycle info and freebies outside the Security Lodge.

Roughly 160 people registered their cycles with Immobolise.com and 24 secure D-Locks and 15 sets of lights were sold during the week.

Cyclists could ask questions and received great advice on cycle safety. Thank you to everyone who stopped by for a chat. Remember you can pop into the Lodge anytime to register your bike with the police, purchase bike safety equipment, register with a campus cycle compound or speak to us about any issue regarding your cycle's safety whilst on campus.

Bike Auction 2012

A big thank you was received from the East Anglia Children’s Hospices (EACH) for the donation resulting from this event.  EACH has thanked the UEA staff and students together with Paul Riches of Bracon-Ash Garage.  Fundraising amounted to a record - £11,000.00

Paul Riches receives the stock of abandoned bikes left at the Campus over the last twelve months. He serviced the best and made them roadworthy ready for auction. Paul is a regular fund raiser for EACH and has also received a Norfolk County Council award for his recycling efforts of what would have been unnecessary waste from scrap bicycles.

The UEA Security Team, within Campus Services, identifies abandoned bikes by placing a sticker on the cycle stating that it will be removed within a specified period of time.  If unclaimed the bike is released and held securely for a minimum of one month, after which it will then be offered for recycling. All bikes are made good for use or used as spares to produce working whole units; no bike is simply dumped.

Permission to hold a re-cycled bike auction on Campus was again given this year by the UEA Estates Management and the Students Union. The aim of the event is to satisfy the following:

• Encouragement to use green transport at an affordable price
• Bike security and crime reduction – cycle locks & tagging - ‘immobilise.com’
• Engagement of the Local Community – support for worthy causes
• Waste recycling effort.

As bikes were sold the ‘Auction Team’ offered customers a discounted ‘D’ type cycle lock and advice on bike security.  The Police ‘Earlham Team’ recommend the fitting of a secure electronic tag device within the bike frame; the owners then register their unique serial number on the ‘immobilise’ website (see www.immobilise.com for details).

Cheap USB/Memory Sticks for sale

UEA Security are recycling lost and unclaimed USB/Memory sticks, in line with ITCS guidelines, and making them available to UEA staff and students for a charity donation (minimum of £1 each) from The Lodge.

Not only does this save hundreds of memory sticks from being disposed of by offering them for re-use, but supports the local charity East Anglia's Children's Hospices (EACH).

As part of the work associated with reducing the number of lost and unclaimed USB/Memory sticks, Security will be encouraging those obtaining memory sticks to mark them with their staff or student number using a UV pen, and have also been working with ITCS who are now providing pop-up messages on PCs in IT areas reminding people to take their USB plug-ins with them when they leave.

As of October 2012, the memory sticks had raised in excess of £150 for EACH.
