A huge amount of work goes on across the University to continually improve the student and staff experience at UEA. In November 2009 the University's first Single Equality Scheme and Action Plan was approved by Council. This replaces our former Gender and Disability Schemes and Plans, and extends our focus to take age, religion and belief and sexual orientation into account. Progress against our goals in the Action Plan will be reported to the Equality and Diversity Committee and the actions will be reviewed annually to ensure our aims keep pace with developments in and the needs of our 'campus populations'. In addition, UEA has an active programme of equality impact assessment, and many other projects and developments include work which results in improvements to the daily lives of those who work and study here.
The university also has a number of equality policies, schemes and action plans in place, which are regularly reviewed for progress against goals and to ensure they are kept up to date.
Our work on equality can be monitored or inspected at any time by the Commission for Equality and Human Rights.
This Commission came into effect on 1 October 2007, replacing the Commission for Racial Equality, the Disability Rights Commission and the Equal Opportunities Commission. In addition, the new Commission promotes Human Rights and encompasses age, religion and belief, and sexual orientation.
