The University of East Anglia (UEA) has undergone great changes in recent years in terms of its student and staff profile. It has the same range of diversity as demonstrated in the urban British Universities, such as Manchester, Glasgow, Sheffield and, although numbers within particular groups may be comparatively low, each year sees growth and change.
The structure of the University has evolved into twenty three Schools contained within four Faculties: Health, Humanities, Science and Social Sciences. There are distinct differences in the profile of each Faculty and this is also true at School level.
A great deal of work has gone into developing a reliable framework within which we identify and work on issues of equality at the University. We also have a continuous programme of statistical development which will eventually achieve a full ‘pipeline’ of information from the admission of a student or recruitment of a member of staff to their eventual graduation or decision to leave, all disaggregated by equality characteristic. We have already built a robust core of information relating to our student and staff populations which we refer to both to raise our own awareness as an institution about the ‘make-up’ of each area of learning and to help us inform our decisions.
The following pages provide an overview of the University’s work relating to equality and how it is meeting its duties under current legislation, working always with a view to best practice rather than simply compliance.
