Biography

Having graduated with a degree in Biological Anthropology from Cambridge University in 1990, I spent some years travelling the globe, working as a part-time cartoonist and occasional archaeologist before finally settling into a management consultancy job in the City of London.  In search of a different challenge, I enrolled on the MSc programme in Environmental and Resource Economics at University College London subsequent to which Professor David Pearce took me on in his CSERGE research unit in the Department of Economics at UCL.  Over the ensuring years I developed my skills in the methods of environmental economics working on diverse projects in the UK, Europe and various far flung corners of the world.  I began studying for a PhD part-time in 1999 and moved up to join Professor Ian Bateman at UEA in 2002.  In 2004, I both completed my PhD and was made a lecturer in the School of Environmental Sciences.  I became a Professor in 2012.

My research interests range across various topics in environmental economics with a strong emphasis on quantitative methods including econometrics and computer-based modelling of economic systems.  One area of focus of my work has been on the development and application of stated and revealed preference methods of non-market valuation.
